At the end of 2005, SANet (the Sustainable Alternatives Network) offered an exciting online learning opportunity for engineering professionals who want to broaden their expertise in industrial energy efficiency. This pilot course was taught by the Sustainable Alternatives Network (SANet) team, a joint initiative of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF). The eight-week course, Fundamentals of Energy Efficiency in Industrial Enterprises, was conducted from 31 October 2005 until 21 December 2005. Online Course Description: Fundamentals of Energy Efficiency in Industrial EnterprisesThe course was designed for various professionals (managers, supervisors, consultants, etc.) working in industries or organizations and dealing on a regular basis in the areas of energy efficiency and resource conservation. The course helped participants identify energy-conservation opportunities in a range of industries. The course was also intended for professional whose current responsibilities do not include energy conservation, but who are keen to learn about it. All participants learned about various rules of thumb for calculating the benefits of energy efficiency; the worksheets for calculating the performance of various systems and equipment (e.g., compressors, cooling towers, pumps, fans) have much value across multiple industries and buildings. Participants from specializations outside the energy management domain improved their profile and became more practical in their approach to overall sustainable development goals. After finishing the course, candidates were able to undertake energy-efficiency studies/audits on their own and, with some experience, feel confident in the various energy-conservation options such studies would generate. The candidates were awarded a certificate on successful completion of the course.
