INTRODUCTION
This company makes gear boxes and rear axles for industrial vehicles, and production is not undertaken in-line, but in batches. The parts undergo a machining stage in which water and cutting fluids are consumed, and a rinsing stage before assembly. The aqueous waste generated in these stages of the process, together with dirty water from the auxiliary cleaning process of the site?s production line, is treated externally.

TECHNOLOGY
Technology Used: The initiative consisted of installing a vacuum evaporation unit which, after filtration, treats the following waste: cutting oils (drilling fluids), spent part rinsing baths and dirty water from the floor and the line washes. The unit generates two effluents: a concentrate (5% of the starting volume) which is treated outside the company, and a distillate of the water contained in the waste. The water is stored in 1,000-litre (260-U.S. gallon) tanks for use in the auxiliary cleaning process and in the rinsing baths. The unit itself consumes a low amount of energy and is odorless.
